For the pest and bird control team at Falcon, it has been a very busy summer so far. In part this is due to the prolonged spate of hot weather which has had an impact on the amount of Plymouth insects and their nests. Wasp nests, ants, flies and bees are the most common problems that we are seeing. We are not complaining though as it keeps us busy. Let’s take a look at some of our most recent projects:
Wasp nest removal
This Plymouth wasp nest was just a small one but had it been left to grow, it would have become much larger and the wasps would have multiplied in numbers over the coming weeks. Wasps nest can grow larger than a football with some colonies becoming up to 12,000 in number. It is best to get these nests when they are smaller like this but of course, if you do discover a wasp nest, whatever size it is, then we urge you to call in the professionals. Don’t approach a wasp nest, poke it with a stick or try and interfere with it yourselves, however small it is. You are likely to get yourself stung.
Ants, ants, ants…
It’s that time of year when the ants are out in full force looking for food. It starts off with a small sighting of one or two and before you know it they are everywhere. Many people think that ant powder will get rid of the problem and head off the to the local supermarket to buy some. This is often not an adequate solution as often the ants are resistant and there really is little point. The ants will soon find their way back in to your home again in their quest to find food. Our team will ensure that we use products that the ants take back to the nest removing you of any further issues.
Flies
It is very difficult to stop those illusive flies getting into your property and the amazing thing is that they seem to be able to get into even the smallest of gaps and then struggle to get out of a door or window that is wide open! How many of you have had that issue? If you have a fly problem and they just won’t stop coming then we can help but there are a few key things that you can do. Obviously flies like food and where there is food they will lay their eggs. Unfortunately, flies aren’t fussy and tend to view everything as food. Ensure that you keep the garden clear of dog mess, make sure your compost bin is secure and don’t leave food out. Flies lay eggs, eggs turn into maggots and maggots turn into flies. Cover your compost and don’t put food in your wheelie bin.
Bee protection
One of our more recently added services is bee protection. Bees are an important part of nature and without them we wouldn’t survive. We need bees, not only to produce honey, but also to ensure that pollination occurs. If you see a bee swarm or bee hive then don’t attempt to disturb it or get rid of it. We will send someone out to remove the swarm and rehome it with specialist bee keepers.
Let us get rid of your Plymouth insects
With these hot weather likely to continue, the chances of you seeing these insects are increasing however, it is only a problem if they start to become a nuisance or if you think that there may be a nest nearby. Don’t approach the nests and try and deal with the problem yourself. Give us a call on 01752 929292 and we will be happy to come out and assess the problem.
