Plymouth experts in removing Fleas

Does the mere mention of the word fleas have you scratching?

For some of us, much as we like to keep our Plymouth houses clean and tidy, sometimes they will take up residence in our homes. How do they get there and more importantly, how do you get rid of them?

Falcon Environmental Services is here to help.

What are fleas?

Fleas are small, wingless insects that thrive on the blood of animals and humans. They have a flattened body, which allows them to move easily through the fur or feathers of their hosts.

Fleas are skilled jumpers and can leap up to 150 times their own body length, enabling them to quickly move from one host to another.

Dogs and cats are great hosts to Plymouth fleas

Usually, fleas will come into your home because of a pet, like a dog or a cat. If pets aren’t treated with a preventative flea treatment or collar, they are receptive to fleas.

Plymouth fleas love nothing more than a warm bodied, furry friend in which to make their home.

Common hiding spots for fleas include:

  • Pet bedding and blankets
  • Carpeted areas, especially in the corners of rooms
  • Furniture, particularly upholstered items
  • Cracks and crevices in floors and walls

Fleas will multiply quickly!

While we love our pets, unfortunately sometimes they can bring us these unwanted guests. if your pet is confined to a particular area of the house it’s not so bad, but if they have free rein then you could end up with a much bigger problem then you imagined.

You see, fleas breed. They will then fall or jump from the dog on to the sofa, the bed, the chairs, the carpet and carry on breeding. Then they will multiply until you have a problem that’s much harder to control.

Without treatment it can take a while to break the cycle

While some of us might be able to resolve the problem by treating our animal, then exercising really thorough vacuuming and cleaning, unfortunately it can take a long time to break the cycle.

If you don’t relish the thought of spending another minute with these fleas in your Plymouth home, don’t fear as help is at hand thanks to our Falcon Environmental Services team.

We do however recommend that you treat your pet to stop the problem reoccurring. If you want rid of your Plymouth fleas then please get in touch ASAP.

Fleas FAQs

Understanding fleas and their behaviour is crucial in combating an infestation. Here are some key points to know:

  • Fleas go through four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult.
  • They prefer warm and humid environments, such as carpets, bedding, or upholstery, to lay their eggs.
  • Fleas can jump long distances and often hitch a ride on pets or humans to move around.
  • They feed on the blood of their hosts, which can cause allergic reactions and discomfort.

To identify a flea problem in your home, look out for the following signs:

  • Bites on pets or humans that are itchy and often appear in clusters.
  • Excessive scratching or grooming behavior in pets.
  • Redness or irritation on the skin, particularly in areas where fleas commonly bite.
  • Small, dark specks on bedding or furniture, which are flea feces.
  • Live fleas jumping or crawling on pets or furniture.

To treat fleas on your pets, you can try the following methods:

  • Use flea shampoos specially formulated to kill fleas and soothe irritated skin.
  • Apply treatments as recommended by your vet.
  • Administer oral medications prescribed by your veterinarian that kill fleas from within.
  • Use flea combs to physically remove fleas and their eggs from your pet’s fur.
  • Regularly groom your pets and check for signs of fleas, especially during flea season.

While there are DIY treatments available, they are often ineffective and will end up causing you more problems in the long run. Instead, call in pest experts who will be able to eradicate the fleas and offer advice on how to keep them from returning.

Preventing flea infestations is key to maintaining a pest-free home. It is important to regularly groom your pets and use flea preventive products as recommended by your veterinarian.

Vacuum your home and furniture regularly, paying attention to areas where pets spend time. Wash pet bedding, rugs, and any fabric items in hot water to kill fleas and their eggs. Keep your yard clean and regularly mow the grass to minimise flea habitats.
