Bed bugs are small, wingless insects that have been plaguing humans for centuries. These tiny pests are known for their ability to infest our beds and bite us whilst we sleep, leaving behind itchy, red welts. Despite their name, bed bugs can be found in more places than just our beds, making them a common household nuisance.Â
Bedbugs feed on the blood of humans and animals and have an uncomfortable bite that trigger an allergic reaction. They breed quickly and can spread quickly in their favourite hiding spots such as mattresses, headboards, wallpaper and bed frames. They are commonly found in student accommodation, hostels and hotels.
Bedbugs are excellent hitchhikers. They can easily latch onto our clothing, luggage, or even pets, and be transported into our homes. Once inside, they find cosy hiding spots in the seams of mattresses, cracks in furniture, and crevices in walls. This allows them to remain undetected until it’s time for their next meal.
While bedbugs are notorious for infesting our beds, they can also be found in a variety of other places within our homes. These resilient pests are experts at hiding, making it important to know where they like to hide out. Some common places where bedbugs can be found include upholstered furniture, such as sofas and chairs, as well as in cracks and crevices in walls. They can even be found in electrical outlets and behind wallpaper. But why do they choose these hiding spots? The answer lies in their attraction factors. These wingless insects are drawn to warmth and carbon dioxide, which is why they often infest areas where humans spend a lot of time. This includes our beds and furniture where we relax and sleep.Â
The most obvious sign that you have bedbugs in your Plymouth, Devon, or Cornwall home are bites. Bedbugs are parasites and feed at night, sucking on the blood of exposed skin.
You can actually see them if you shine a torch into the crevices and cracks around your bed or mattress. As they only like wood and fabric it is a good idea to check around the head of your mattress.
Other obvious signs include tiny black spots on the mattress. This is actually dried bedbug faeces. If you squash a bug that has recently eaten, then you will see blood. The room may also have a musty odour: A strong, musty odour is often a sign of a severe bedbug infestation. It’s caused by the scent glands that bedbugs use to communicate with each other.
While bedbugs are tricky to treat yourself, one of our Falcon Environmental Services professionals will be able to confirm if you have a problem and treat it accordingly using a number of methods.
Once we have treated your home, we advise that you wash bedding etc at 60 degrees and consider getting a new quilt and pillows.
Bedbugs are not attracted to dirt but they do like places to hide, so it is best to keep clutter to a minimum in your bedroom. Keep the room clean and tidy and wash bedding regularly at 60 degrees. Vacuuming the bed and the cracks and crevices around will also help.
Be vigilant when travelling or bringing second-hand furniture into your home. Inspect hotel rooms thoroughly for signs of bedbugs before settling in, and thoroughly clean and inspect any used furniture before bringing it into your home.
